Wat gebeurt er als een cloudprovider je de toegang weigert? Als geopolitieke spanningen, sancties of een plotselinge beleidswijziging je bedrijf tot stilstand brengen? Datasoevereiniteit is geen abstract begrip uit een compliance-document. De gevolgen zijn concreet, urgent en kunnen enorm zijn.
Neem ATB Bank in 2024. Financieel gezond, operationeel sterk, totdat Microsoft en AWS de verbinding verbraken. Als reactie op Amerikaanse sancties blokkeerden verschillende partijen, zoals Microsoft en AWS, direct de toegang tot essentiële systemen. E-mail: onbereikbaar. Applicaties: afgesloten. Interne documenten: weg. Kritieke data was niet meer te bereiken. De operationele controle verdween. Juridische en financiële processen kwamen vast te staan.
Het resultaat was vernietigend: het betekende het einde van het bedrijf, niet door financiële problemen, maar doordat de toegang tot eigen data wegviel. Dát is wat een gebrek aan soevereiniteit betekent. Geen overtreding van regels, maar volledig verlies van controle.
Soevereiniteit zonder concessies: volledige controle, zonder compromissen
De Amerikaanse Cloud Act kan je bedrijf van de ene op de andere dag stilleggen. Ook als je data in Europa staat. Echte bedrijven verloren binnen minuten de toegang tot kritieke systemen, back-ups en e-mail, simpelweg omdat een buitenlands rechtssysteem dat toestond.
